What’s in a Name?
“Itzcali” comes from nahuatl, one of the indigenous languages in Mexico. In nahuatl itzcali means ‘place of beauty’.
I chose this name for my company both because I think it makes really good sense as a jewellery brand, but also to honour the traditional Mexican culture.
I lived for two years in Mexico. I love the culture, the country and its great history. Today a lot of jewellery is produced in Asia but when I created my company in 2016 I found it natural to start up production and design in Mexico. I started out working together with a design trio in Mexico City. Now I have three different collaborations all around Mexico.
The jewellery comes in silver, gold-plated and rose gold-plated. The style is simple, graphic and feminine and it isn’t a design you would at first associate with Mexico. I think this combination is really exciting. Through the design and the quality of the jewellery I would very much like to tell another story about Mexico than the common assumptions about ponchos, tacos and sombreros.
In cooperation with the designers in Mexico we have a strong focus on beautiful craftsmanship, high quality and sustainable production, both in terms of the environment and working conditions.
The idea for Itzcali grew out of my love for Mexico, my passion for jewellery and beautiful things, along with a strong desire to be independent. In the spring of 2016 I took my partner and our one-year-old daughter for a trip around Mexico to meet with my first working partner, begin a partnership and make my first purchases for Itzcali. It is an adventure to create and maintain a modern webshop. If you would like to follow my journey, you can find me on instagram or sign up for my newsletter.
2018 is the first year that I have designed my own collection. This small collection will be put into production this spring and will come on sale in late summer.
Thank you so much for stopping by. It means everything.
